After their triumphant Bluesfest appearances with newest member Jim Elliott (Cruel Sea), Dog Trumpet return to the Milton Theatre for a fun filled night, playing songs from their extensive catalogue and some brand new, soon to be classics.
Dog Trumpet is a family affair spearheaded by brothers Peter O’Doherty and Reg Mombassa, former founding members of iconic Australian ARIA Award winning and Hall of Fame band Mental As Anything. The Mentals have had over 20 top 40 hits in Australia. In 1985 their song ‘Live It Up’ reached No. 1 in Scandinavia, No. 2 in Germany and No. 3 in the UK. ‘You’re So Strong’ peaked at No. 21 on the US dance chart in 1985 and ‘Too Many Times’ was also a top 20 hit for the Mentals in Canada in 1981.
Over the last twenty years as Dog Trumpet they have released five albums: Two Heads One Brain, Suitcase, Dog Trumpet, Antisocial Tendencies and River of Flowers. They continued their sonic alchemy of roots based, folk, pop, country and semi-abstract blues with their sixth and best release, a double album, Medicated Spirits.
Medicated Spirits features the songs ‘What Falls Away’, 'Speed of Light', ‘With Good Reason' and 'Made in the World', and is an LP full of wit, surprise and warmth, continuing their sonic alchemy of psychedelic folk, country and abstract blues driven by Reg's distinctive slide guitar and Peter's melodic acoustic guitar and mandolin.
Reg is well known for his idiosyncratic work for Mambo Graphics and as a fine artist. See more of Reg’s art here. Peter is also a successful and much sought after painter. For over three decades the brothers have exhibited in Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Asia and now the USA.
So put a spring in your step this October and come sample the winning tunes of Dog Trumpet at Milton Theatre.
